Alzheimer's Deficits - By: Robert Baird, Posted on: 2007-12-12

Visual Disturbance

Individuals who have been diagnosed as having Alzheimer's disease may also experience visual problems. Visual disturbances include decreased depth perception, increased sensitivity to glare, reduced sensitivity to glare, reduced sensitivity for distinguishing subtle contrast, blurred vision, and shrinkage of the visual field. To compensate for these deficits, design elements should include appropriate illumination, contrasting color palette, color, uncluttered spatial furniture arrangement, and simplistic patterns.

Illumination

• Avoid positioning lighting fixtures directly over a bed; this will reduce the glare and spotlight effect in the individual's direct line of vision when lying on back.

• Design lighting to be indirect and diffused to reduce glare and shadow patterns (shadows sometimes appear to be dark holes or ghostlike figures).

Color

• Select a color scheme that includes warm hues and accents since cooler hues (such as blues) appear "washed out" to aged eyes.

• Use contrasting colors to distinguish rooms, door facings, furniture, etc.

Spatial Arrangement

The dining room and bathroom should be clearly visible, accessible, and at a distance consistent with the individual's competency level.

Alzheimer patients who cannot directly see the bathroom are more likely to be incontinent. Whereas plumbing cannot readily be altered, a portable toilet may be used.

Remove low-lying furniture (footstools, hassocks) from pathways to reduce risk of falls.

Pattern

• Avoid using sharp color contrasts in patterns displayed on wall coverings, floor coverings, window treatments, and upholstery materials. These patterns create visual complexity and can increase visual confusion..

• Avoid using abstract patterns that have strong color contrast and distorted designs.
