Smoking – Consider The Effects Before Quitting - By: Tim Bock, Posted on: 2007-12-05

Smoking is a deadly habit that affects millions of people. Every cigarette contains over 4 thousands chemicals, sixty of which have been proven to cause cancer. Most people assume lung cancer is the primarily concern of smoking. However, while lung cancer is a concern, there are so many other diseases that have been linked to smoking. Bladder cancer, pancreatic, kidney, cervix and esophageal cancer have also been linked to smoking.

One of the most harmful ingredients in cigarette smoke is the tar. The tar is deposited into the lungs which damages the air sacs. This leads to shortness of breath and other long term lung problems. Emphysema is one of the major disorders caused by smoking.

One should also consider the effects smoking has on children. Smoking should be avoided in pregnant woman, because the chemicals will be absorbed into the unborn baby. The same also goes for women who are breastfeeding. It has been proven that the chemicals from smoking will be passed through the breast milk, to the infant. It’s also important to note the 80% of smokers start during their teenage years. Many times this habit is learned from either mom or dad.

It is possible for your heart and lungs to heal, but it takes time. Needless to say, if you’re a smoker, you should quit as soon as possible. A good idea is to join a support group. It’s always more helpful if you’re around others who know what you’re going through. There are also many products on the market that can help you quit. These products include nicotine gum and patches. No matter what method you choose, please do it today. You’ll be glad you did.
