The Game of Texas Holdem - By: Steve Young, Posted on: 2007-08-09

To many people, the most important part of poker is the cards, and they often do not consider anything else. This is a mistake, however, as the only way to really win is to be able to out-think, and out-bluff, your opponent. The cards are just not as important as you might think. Additionally, you never know how skilled your opponent is- for example, it has recently become popular in eastern Europe, and is now played pretty well everywhere English is spoken (and many places it is not). This means there is a wide variety of different experience opposing you, especially if you play online poker.

Bluffing is an extremely important skill to learn, if you intend to play poker at all well. If you don't know how to bluff, you will quickly lose out to players that do. However, you need to watch out- some people become addicted to bluffing when they first learn it, and end up bluffing too much and giving the game away. As soon as other players realize that you are often bluffing, they will start to call you on it, and then you'll have no chance. Thus it is very important to use self control, and limit your bluffing. Poker online is a little different, of course, and is becoming increasingly popular. Because at an online poker table, you cannot actually see your opponents, they may well be quite different from what you would expect.

One of the currently most popular poker games is Texas Holdem. The great thing about this game is that it can be learned very quickly, meaning everyone can play. Within a few hours, you'll be confident in playing your hands. When it comes to Texas Holdem, one of the main things to remember is that you are only going to get two cards in your hand before a three-card flop. This means you have a big decision to make with only seeing two cards. There is a lot of information on the probability of what those cards can mean at http://www.pokerroom.com/texas-holdem. And remember you can play free poker on PokerRoom.com 24-7 when ever and where you feel like it.

Texas Holdem Overview:

1. You need at least four players, one of whom is the dealer. This position changes each round, and the current dealer has a marker--the dealer marker--in front of them.

2. Use a normal deck of 52 cards.

3. To start the game, the dealer gives each player two cards face down- these are the hole cards.

4. On your turn, you can either raise, call, or fold.

5. The amount you can bet will be different depending on the type of game being played.

6. After everyone has finished their bets, the dealer burns one card and flips over three (the flop).

7. Everyone has another chance to bet.

8. Next, the dealer burns another card and flips one more onto the table, the turn card.

9. Another round of betting ensues, beginning with the player to the dealers left.

10. The dealer then burns one last card, and flips one over. This card is the river.

11. The players now try and make the best poker hand they can, using only their hole cards and the five on the table. You can find a list of possible hands at http://www.pokerroom.com/. Note that the hands can be no more then 5 cards.

12. There is one more round of betting.

13. All the players who have not yet folded then show their hands.

14. The person with the best hand wins. If there are two matching good hands, they will share the prize pot.
