What Are Directories?
Directories are getting more and more important on the Internet. A directory is a website on which you can add your link in a category of your choice. There are several sorts of directories.
There are paid directories and free directories. The starting directories are free most of the time, and when they grow bigger, they turn into paid directories.
Next to paid and free directories, there are SE-friendly directories and non SE-friendly directories. Technically, the SE-friendly directories are the best to submit your link. These SE-friendly directories have SE-friendly URL?s, which means that the urls look like:

http://www.domain.ext/business_and_economy/real_estate_and_property/
Instead of:
http://www.domain.ext/dir/7/7.php

The links you?ll submit in a directory will most of the time be permanent.

A famous, free directory is DMOZ. This is a comprehensive human edited directory. This website is an exceptional one. It?s free to submit your link, but they only take the best links! So if you have a DMOZ listing, you should be proud! Since a couple of weeks, DOMZ directory is receiving submissions again, after the server crash they got a while ago.

But what can directories do for you?
Directories can certainly improve your number of backlinks. If you use the right anchor texts and submit your links in the right categories, it'll increase your position in the search results of, for example Google, search engines.

The 'good' directories can provide you traffic. But it will only be a small percentage of your total traffic count.

Next to that, a link in a directory can certainly help you with increasing your Pagerank. If you have bought (Or submitted to free directories) links on inner pages which have a nice PR, they will certainly help you increase your PR.

There are several companies or individuals which offer cheap directory submission services. If you have a small budget, you can consider one of those. They?ll submit your link to free directories in the right categories.
