Your Child’s First Day Of School - By: nick rauge, Posted on: 2007-07-04

For many children, the first day of school can be traumatic. The first time away from mom and seeing new people they have never seen before. The surroundings are unfamiliar and there is a lot of confusion. This can be scary for adults much less a five year old. You need to do some things to make the first day and a few days after that comfortable for your little one.

Usually at the time of registration, you can walk your child through the school and show them the classroom. Some school systems require the kindergarten teachers to be there to meet the children for the first time. The child can look around the room and see what it has to offer them. This is the first step in introducing your child to something new. You can show them the bathrooms, which can be overwhelming in another way, they are big and hollow sounding.

Now that that is over, you can start shopping for a few school supplies. Always let your child help with this shopping. If they pick things that are needed and that they like, it will be easier on the first day. They will have something they bought with them. A personal security blanket as you would call it. Clothes are another shopping trip, they want to fit in just like the older kids do.

Something’s to do the week before the first day of school is to talk about the teacher the kids and how much fun it will be to be with other kids. Do not forget to mention gym and recess. Some schools also have a snack time, if your school system does, this is a plus to mention. You can also endorse the classroom. You might remind them of the things they saw in the room when they registered. Positive enforcement will make the child’s first day of school easier for both of you.

If you are a working parent, take off of work to take your child to school. This means a lot to them and reassures you that they are all right being without you. Some parents have a hard time letting go, more so than many children. Relax, they will be fine.
